Ranby Hall

This mansion was built for the Otter family of Clayworth, Notts, in 1868.

In 1905 it was occupied by Lt Col Rowley Richard Conway Hill and in 1919 by Lord Charles Cavendish Bentinck.

The Revd John B Haggar resided here in 1933.

Ranby Hall was built in the Victorian period (1868) but in late Georgian style with pedimented front and porte-cochere.

The stable block - still in use - built in the same pleasing yellow-buff brick as the Hall.

The small pigeoncote or dovecote is an added feature of interest.

The most attractive wrought iron sign for Ranby Grange is supported on a tall oak post with chamfered corners and an acorn finial.

St German's consists of west tower, nave and chancel and was rebuilt by James Fowler in 1861-62 in Decorated style.

The tower arch, though, reuses part of the Norman chancel arch and the font dates from the 15th century.

The church stands alone, high in the Wolds, with fine views over the Bain valley.

Although the church is constructed of limestone ashlar, the surface of the stone, particularly on the north side, is taking on a brick-red colour. This is thought to be a lichen.

On the south-eastern corner of the tower is this unusual sculpture: a double head with tight ringlets and a broad crown over both heads.

NB although the Historic England description names this feature as a gargoyle this is not accurate as it does not conduct water and would more properly be termed a grotesque.

This label stop is at the end of the hood mould over the chancel's south window.

It is typical of the 'medieval' faces used by Victorian architects to embellish their Gothic designs.

Part of the head of a fifteenth century window - presumably from the medieval church here - has been re-used, built into the exterior of the vestry to form blind arcading.

The plank west doors are furnished with some impressive blacksmith's pieces: two pairs of eye-catching hinges, a handle on a snowflake-shaped fixing plate, and rows of metal studs.
