OVERVIEW

Where is Archaeology to-day?

Site of Roman Forum, Lincoln

Lincolnshire antiquarians of the 19th century paid visits to archaeological sites and made reports on what they had seen. It was not until after the Second World War that Society members took up their trowels. Post-war interest in archaeology nationally grew rapidly. Local digging groups mushroomed and flourished. The Lincolnshire Local History Society had a very active team managing some outstanding excavations. Work on the Lincoln Roman aqueduct and the big site before the library at Bishop Grosseteste University College to name but two. The team was so well equipped that the local archaeology units hired our equipment. Sites all over the County were surveyed and training digs were organised.

The growing national interest in archaeology witnessed the expansion in the number of professional archaeologists and the establishment of archaeological units. Changes in planning and heritage management have protected our archaeology but it has driven unit workers so hard that they have neither the time nor energy to assist the amateur. Archaeology has become so technical that the amateur has to rely on the professional for support and guidance. The outcome is that SLHA now has no archaeology team active in the field. The energy is channelled into education, publication and advice and support for other enthusiasts. The annual archaeology seminar day arranged by SLHA each autumn is popular. Regular publications keep members informed and advice is given to individuals wanting to pursue an interest in practical archaeology.
