Until recently there was an octagonal blockwork structure in Addlethorpe which was almost certainly the remains of a direction-finding (D/F) homer.

This World War 2 device housed a radio transmitter to help bombers track their return journeys from the continent to RAF bases in the UK.

The solid blockwork base (about 5m across and 2m high) supported a tall octagonal wooden tower.

SLHA would welcome more information about this particular structure.

The church of St Nicholas in Addlethorpe is a fine example of the fifteenth-century Perpendicular style.

It lost its chancel at much the same time as its neighbour in Ingoldmells and for the same reason – the incumbent wouldn’t go to the trouble and expense of repair.

The medieval screens earned the church its place in Simon Jenkins’ England’s Thousand Best Churches. Not easy to gain access though.

Kelly's Directory 1930 reports :-

"The church of St. Nicholas, standing on rising ground, is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of clerestoried nave of five bays and aisles, an especially beautiful south porch and embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 6 bells :

the chancel was pulled down in 1706 and has never been rebuilt :

there are two carved screens, one of which, under the arch which separates the tower from the nave, is nearly perfect, and has carved upon the solid heading of its doorway the legend: "Orate p. anima Johannis Dideck senior et uxor eius ;" the other, under the chancel arch, is enriched with colour and gilding:

the eastern portions of both aisles are also inclosed with screen work to form chapels: each of these retains its piscina: at the west ends of the aisles are other portions of screens once inclosing these:

the font is coeval with the church:

the windows of the north aisle retain fragments of ancient stained glass, including several figures of angels and ecclesiastics, and a new west window was erected about 1895:

the parapet of the porch is adorned with gracefully carved foliage, and the apex of the gable bears a crucifix with richly foliated terminals: the sides and angles are supported by buttresses terminating in pinnacles, and the parapet is panelled: within the porch is a stoup, and above it a niche, and another niche appears over the doorway :

on the north side are six handsome buttresses, surmounted by pinnacles adorned with fretwork, and bearing grotesque figures holding scrolls :

in 1875 the church was reseated and partially repaired by public subscription: there are about 250 sittings:

the base and part of the shaft of a cross remain in the churchyard"

White's Directory 1872 has :-

"The Church (St. Nicholas) is a very beautiful specimen of the Early Perpendicular style of architecture, and was built probably during the transition from the Decorated to that style, some time  between 1360 and 1420.

It consists of nave, with a clerestory over, north and south aisles, having each a chapel, and a tower with six bells, and had formerly a chancel, which was taken down in 1706, when its arch was closed with brickwork.

The north and the south chapels are each separated from the nave and aisle by carved oak screens of excellent design and finish, and still in good preservation.

The north chapel has just been restored under the care and at the cost of J. Ellett Brogden, Esq., the proprietor of the Lincoln Gazette, who resides at Addlethorpe House.

Some of the oak benches remain in the nave; many unfortunately having been destroyed to make way for pews, unsightly erections of the last century.

The tower is less ornate than the rest of the building, which is very richly ornamented, especially on the north side. The buttresses terminate in carved pinnacles. Springing from these, on the north side, a little below the parapet, are six curiously carved, projecting, half-length, winged figures, three of them bearing scrolls, only two of which are now legible. That to the west bears the inscription, "Of God sayng coms no ill." The other has the words," God for his mcy. bryng: Ha to blys yet ha pd. to yis." The second figure from the east end is crowned; and the tradition still remains in the parish that it was intended for an effigy of King John, a tradition which may probably contain some truth, as that king gave by a charter, in the first year of his reign, the advowson to the Priory of Spalding. Time, and perhaps ill-treatment, have so marred the features, that it is now impossible to conjecture whom it was meant to represent.

On the south porch there still remains the old gable cross, sculptured on both sides; that on the south representing the Crucifixion, the north a Madonna and Child. The roof is of oak, richly ornamented at the angles with shields and foliage and curious embossments. The beams are supported by crowned angel corbels; some of the work still retaining much of its original beauty.

Part of the old chancel screen still remains affixed to the wall at the east end. Opposite to this, and stretching across the tower arch, is another screen of beautiful workmanship, standing from ten to twelve feet high, in the pediment of the central compartment of which is carved the inscription, " Orate p. anima Johanis Dudick senior et uxor ejus."

The rectory, valued in K.B. at £9. 10s. 2d., and now at £154, is in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and incumbency of the Rev. Thomas Whitworth, who is also vicar of Thorpe St. Peter, near Boston, where he resides. The Rev. James Spawforth, who resides at Ingoldmells, is curate in charge.

The Rectory House is an old building, erected in 1729, and here are about 5 acres of glebe"

It is known that a very early photo (now lost) of this part of the church roof did not show the presence of this carving, and there is no photographic evidence to say if it was in any other area of the church. It isn't known either when it was placed there. It may have been originally located in the now demolished chancel, or brought from another building. It is also unusual in that it is situated at the apex of the roof, unlike the others"
