Candlesby, St Benedict
Candlesby, St Benedict
St Benedict, Candlesby, was built in 1838 by the architect Edward D. Rainey of Spilsby and altered by Eley White* in 1897.
It is built of yellow brick.
*Eley Emlyn White (1853-1900) was a London architect in partnership with John Christopher who built and restored a number of churches.

Three windows with hood moulds light either side of the nave. Dating from 1838 they are only slightly pointed, ie, neither classical nor ‘gothick’. The vestry built against the south side of the tower is a later addition in rather redder brick. The church is Grade II listed:

Judging from the watercolour painting of the church before the 1897 restoration, the geometric floor tiles may date from 1838. The three lancet windows above the altar can be seen.

Candlesby St Benedict with box pews.
This watercolour of the church before the restoration of 1897 reveals many changes: there were box pews; the same roof timbers but without the present dark stain; two hat pegs above the pulpit; James Bass Topham’s mural tablet in the same place, but three narrow arches into the chancel with what appear to be decorative swags of dried flowers; not a sanctuary rail right across the width of the chancel but a rail around three sides of the altar. Note that the datestone is in the same spot above the chancel arch.

Candlesby, St Benedict, Nave, Window
The central window on the north side of the nave has stained glass by Powells of Whitefriars depicting St David holding spear and shield with a frieze of harps, crowns and capital ‘D’s. David, son of Jesse, found favour by playing his harp to ease King Saul’s mind. Later he became King of Judah. The text reads:
In loving memory of JOHN/ FRANKLIN RAWNSLEY/ Died 4 Dec 1924 Aged 62/ All Israel & Judah loved David for/ he went out and came in before them.
This sentence is a quotation from the First Book of Samuel, chapter 18, verse 16 in the King James Bible.

Candlesby, St Benedict, Nave, Window
The central window on the south side of the nave has stained glass by Powells of Whitefriars depicting St Giles who is shown with a white hind: according to legend hermit Giles was living near the mouth of the Rhone and King Wamba shot an arrow while in pursuit of a hind, but it struck and crippled Giles with whom the hind had taken refuge. The text reads:
To the beloved memory of Henry Giles Alington M.A./ Demy* of Magdalen College Oxford H.M.I.S.** 1866-1901/ Rector of Candlesby 1902-1922 Died 2 Dec. 1928 Aged 91./ "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace,/ whose mind is stayed on Thee”
More on H G Alington may be found at:
* A demy is a foundation scholar at Magdalen College Oxford, so called because such a scholar originally received half the allowance of a fellow. **HMIS stands for Her Majesty’s Inspector of Schools.
