Local signage states :-

"Can you imagine the excitement when the medieval stone altar was discovered buried during the 1953 restoration of the Chancel.

It was hidden away in the 16th Century to save it from destruction and is now back in its rightful place.

It is very special to the church as very few survived the reformation"

Kelly's Directory of Lincolnshire 1937 states :-

"The church of St. Clement is a building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with eight crocketed pinnacles, containing 3 bells, two of which are of pre-Reformation date ; the third was cast in 1761"

"the chancel was restored in 1876, and in 1909 the body of the church was restored; during the course of the work a piscina was discovered in the south aisle: there is also a piscina and aumbry in the east wall of the north aisle, which was probably a guild chapel in the 16th century:

an ancient altar stone measuring 7ft. 6in. by 2ft. 3in, a large memorial stone to Christopher Holloair, dated 1653, and a somewhat smaller one with relics of an undecipherable inscription in old-English capitals were also found:

on the ground below the church being dug two skeletons were discovered with no traces of coffin or name plate; the position close in front of the old altar suggests that they may have been priests of the parish.

"The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £320 with 38 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and held since 1920 by the Rev. William Cruse Webb, of Durham University"

As part of this work the lead on the north aisle roof was replaced and the old lead that was known to contain many graffiti carvings was preserved and put on display in specially made display cases within the church"
