Watery Lane in Little Cawthorpe is the site of a ford which gives the village pub, the Royal Oak, its nickname 'the Splash'.

Undated postcard by Valentine's.

St Helen's church stands on a significant mound; there is a stiff climb up from the south.

Designed by R J Withers in 1860, St Helen's was considered a "model church for parishes of modest means".

Built of red brick with black brick decoration  the building has lancet and traceried windows, an overhanging slate roof and a western bellcote and spire.

It is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

Red bricks laid in Flemish bond are used in the construction of St Helen's.

Decoration is added in the bands of black bricks, the ridge tiles (some remain), the panel of hung tiles below the bellcote, and the cast iron finials.

This Victorian composition in colourful glass depicts Christ's controversial healing the paralytic man of Capernaum who has been lowered through an opening in the roof of the building created by his friends. The critical 'teachers of the law' are seen standing to the right. (Mark 2, vv.1-5).

The six-pointed star is in the tracery of the south window of the chancel.

The text I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE is a quotation from the incident related in the Book of John Chapter 11 verse 25.

Jesus offers these words in comfort to the sisters Martha and Mary whose brother Lazarus has died, prior to bringing Lazarus back to life.

In St Helen’s churchyard is this five-foot marble Latin cross on a stepped base, paid for by parishioners and unveiled on 7 September 1919.

It originally bore lead letters but following loss of a number of those the parish council had the monument cleaned and restored with painted incised letters.

The photograph shows the south face. On the eastern face are commemorated three brothers who gave their lives in the Second World War:

JOHN/ LANWARNE/ CRIBB/ LT. F.A.A. 1942

HENRY/ LANWARNE/ CRIBB/ W.O. R.A.F. 1944

OWEN/ LANWARNE/ CRIBB/ AIR GUNNER 1944

Their sister Mary married in 1946 and continued to live opposite in the Old Parsonage, Little Cawthorpe, until her death in 1975 at the age of 70. There is a memorial plaque to her in St Helen’s church.
