Local signage states :-

"This horse-drawn fire engine was made in 1831 by Hadley, Simpkin, & Lott of London. It is a manual pump operated by alternately raising and lowering the horizontal bars on each side of the engine.

The rural disturbances of 1830-1 provoked at least 28 cases of arson in Lincolnshire. The owner of the Redbourne Estate, the Duke of St. Alban's, certainly owned an engine by 1834, and it is reasonable to presume that this is the same engine, bought to protect his property. There was no county fire-service until 1948.

The engine bears the maker's plate "By The King's Patent Hadley, Simpkin, & Lott, Long Acre,  London." The firm started in 1791 as Hadley & Simpkin, becoming Hadley, Simpkin, & Lott in 1829, and the name changed to Merryweathers in 1836. The royal patent explains the coat of arms of William IV on the side. The machine was overhauled by Merryweathers in 1911.

Kelly's Directory 1930 states :-

"The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and a lofty western tower containing a clock and 6 bells:

the whole is embattled, and, with the exception of the tower, is ornamented with crocketed pinnacles:

there is a very fine stained window in the chancel, and twelve others in the aisles representing the Twelve Apostles:

this church is the burial place of the Beauclerk family, dukes of St. Albans, the family mausoleum being situated on the right side of the chancel, in which are handsome mural tablets to the memory of various members of the family, and a memorial to William Carter, d. 1752, and Roger Carter, d. 1774, predecessors of the De Vere family in this estate:

there is also in the chancel an ancient stone with the incised effigy of a knight in full armour, supposed to date from about 1500:

on the east wall of the nave is a white marble tablet in memory of the nine men of this parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18:

in 1888 the church was entirely reseated and a new porch added, and in 1894 a new organ was erected in memory of Elizabeth Catherine, Dowager Duchess of St. Albans, d. 2nd December, 1893:

there are 150 sitting"

White's Directory 1872 reports :-

"The Church (St. Andrew) is a handsome structure, with a lofty tower and six bells, and its nave and chancel have side aisles.

The aisle on the south side of the chancel is lighted by a painted glass window, and contains several handsome memorials of the Carter and St. Albans families, whose vault is under this part of the church.

On the north side of the communion table is a tomb, bearing the figure of a knight in armour, and inscribed to Gerald Sothill, who died in 1401.

The vicarage, valued in K.B. at £5 10., is now worth £280 per annum, and is in the incumbency of the Rev. George Godfrey, M.A., who has a neat Gothic vicarage house.

Redbourne, Village Sign
Redbourne, Village Sign

The text reads :-

"The name Redbourne appears to be derived from the old English name HREODBURNA which means reedy burn and has reference to the stream which flows through the village.

The knight in armour is SIR GERALD SOTHILL who owned the castle, the site of which is to the east of St. Andrew's Church, together with the land in Redbourne and Blyton. He died in 1410. His tomb is in the church, on the north side of the chancel.

The falcon denotes the association of Redbourne with the Dukedom of St. Albans. which carries the hereditary title of Grand Falconer of England. The first Duke was the son of CHARLES II by NELL GWYN. The Redbourne Estate come into the possession of the family in 1791, when LORD WILLIAM BEAUCLERK, who was to become the 8th Duke, married CHARLOTTE CARTER-THELWALL. She inherited it from her late father, the REV. ROBERT CARTER-THELWALL. It was ultimately sold in 1917 by the trustees of the 11th Duke.

The propeller refers to the building of the airfield on land situated to the north east of the village. This was used by fighter aircraft during the Second World War.

Throughout the years, the main activity in the village has been farming. This is depicted by the ears of wheat which have been carved on the sides of the post.

The dog's head, which is to be found on the back of the post, is the logo of master craftsman RICHARD COLLINSON of Brigg, who carved the sign.

This sign was erected by the Redbourne Parish Council to commemorate the MILLENNIUM. 2000 YEARS AFTER THE BIRTH OF CHRIST. Contributions towards the cost were received from the North Lincolnshire Council and the Redbourne 50/50 Club"
