Old Rectory viewed from St Genewy's churchyard. Now Holly Tree Lodge Care Home.

White's Directory 1872 comments "The rectory, valued in K.B. at £23, and now at £800, is in the incumbency of the Rev. E. F. St. Leger, B.A., who has a commodious residence. The glebe is 66 acres, and a yearly rent-charge is paid in lieu of tithes"

Much of St Genewys dates from the late 13th century, notably the tall slender arcades and the aisle windows with their Y-tracery.

Within the chancel, however, is a blocked 12th century doorway.

The fittings date from the restoration by G E Street of 1866.

White's Directory 1872 reports :-

"The Church (St. Genewys) is a spacious stone edifice of Early English architecture, comprising nave, chancel, aisles and tower with three bells.

It was new roofed and repaired in 1854, and its chancel, which contains recumbent effigies of a knight and lady, was restored in 1866".

Kelly's Directory 1930 reports :-

"The church of St. Genewys is a spacious edifice of stone, in the Norman, Early English and Later styles, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 3 bells, one of which is inscribed to St. John:

the church, originally a fine structure, was beautified by several of the Nevill family, who were lords of the manor till 1384-5:

it suffered much at the time of the Reformation, and again in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, A.D. 1566, when five of its altar stones were broken up and used as paving stones :

in 1820, by the direction of Archdeacon Bayley, the portions of the aisles which overlapped the tower were pulled down, a fine rood-screen destroyed, and forty-one shields of arms of the Nevills, which, with other glass, had up to that time adorned the windows, were carried off and inserted in the windows of Messingham church, of which Dr. Bayley was then rector; the materials of the destroyed rood-loft are said to have been used to make a bridge:

one doorway and the tower arch are Norman:

the principal part of the tower is Early Decorated, the upper stage being Perpendicular:

the font, of Caen stone and marble, and designed by the late G. E. Street esq. R.A. was presented by the late Rev. E. F. St. Leger M.A. rector 1863-82, who also erected a memorial window to his son Richard, d. 1879:

the communion plate, which is partly of pre-Reformation date, was given by the Rev. William Morley, rector 1721-31:

in the north aisle, beneath a beautiful Early English doorway, is a sepulchral slab, with a legend in Norman French, to John de Thevelby; another slab bears the shield of Nevill, and a defaced inscription to a member of that family, lord of Scotton in 1382; a third slab displays the bust of a priest within a quatrefoil, and one other, only fragmentary, has some Lombardic letters:

in the south aisle there is an hagioscope, and the chancel retains an aumbry, piscina and credence:

in the south aisle is the recumbent effigy of a knight in mail armour with crossed legs, probably of the reign of Edward II. and also a female effigy; a slab with floriated cross bears a mutilated inscription to Richard Sallenby, 1400:

there is a shield on the roof of the chancel, which was restored in 1866:

the fine east window is a memorial to the late Rev. Edward Frederick St. Leger M.A. rector, who died in 1882:

directly over the font is a white marble tablet on a red background, erected in memory of the 32 men of the parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18:

there are sittings for 300 persons"
