What is modern and what is old is now difficult to decide. In any case the twentieth-century restorations have produced a wholly successful effect of a rambling picturesque manor house of 'olden time' - comment from Pevsner.

Pevsner comments that the west wall is Saxo-Norman with much of the rest being Transitional "mixing up round and pointed arches and norman and E.E. motifs"

A 1349 visitation to Stragglethorpe records the inhabitants complaints about their struggles to carry corpses through flood waters for burial at Beckingham"
