Bigby All Saints old font
The 14th century font has, unusually, nine sides. It was stolen from the church and was later recognised in use as a water trough on the property of Mrs Sarah Beacock who restored it to its original purpose on 10th December 1878, as shown on the small tablet on the wall behind it.
The bowl has been set on a 19th century pedestal and there are Minton tiles on the floor around it.

The font is located at the west end of the nave on the axis with the centre aisle. It is a plain drum font on a very worn chamfered base composed of five separate pieces of stone.
A large portion of stone is missing from the north lip and some mortar repair is evident on the south lip. It is lead-lined with a centre drain.

The font at St John’s is known to have been designed by Teulon. As an architect he was often responsible for the design of all the furnishings of a building as well as its structure.
In this instance he also designed the eight ceramic tiles – each one different – on the faces of the octagonal bowl. The brick plinth is elaborate and unusual.

In 1872 the font was in the north aisle and White's Directory has "The font formerly stood within the little arch on the south side of the nave and at its western end, and is now temporarily placed in the north aisle. The font is an unusual and beautiful design.
The bowl is square in cross section but with a fluted underside, like barrels side by side.
The four faces each have an incised circular botanical design, one of passion flowers.

The gift of Bishop Alexander some time after 1141.
Made in Tournai, Belgium by Flemish craftsmen using Tournai Marble quarried on the banks of the river Escaut.
Decoration round the sides of the bowl consists of grotesque animals and mythical dragons representing original sin.
Steps are modern placed there in 1890 by Dean Butler.
Seven of these very expensive Tournai fonts still survive in Britain although only three of these are complete including this one.
The most famous other example is at Winchester Cathedral however there is another one in Lincoln Diocese at Thornton Curtis which originally belonged to the Knights Templar.

A horizontal crack across the bowl can be seen which might be transport damage. The font was brought from Tournai, Belgium shortly after 1141.
Alternatively it might have been damaged during the earthquake of 1185 which caused much of the cathedral to collapse.

Although the octagonal font dates from 1850 it is decorated in a very traditional style, the eight faces carrying the symbols of the Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and traditional Christian symbols including the dove and wafer, the sign of the Trinity and the lamb and flag. Those visible in the photograph are the winged ox for St Luke and IHS, the first three letters of Jesus in Greek.

Kelly's Directory 1930 notes "the original 14th century font basin was discovered in a field in 1912, in use as a cattle trough ; it was replaced, mounted on a shaft and base of appropriate design and re-dedicated in 1914"

A relatively plain fourteenth century octagonal font with each face of the bowl bearing a blank shield within a quatrefoil. Sadly, the bowl has been quite severely cracked.

The font dates from c.1250 and was partially re-cut in the seventeenth century. It is supported by four columns with spiral decoration and central larger plain shaft.
The octagonal bowl of the font has been re-cut with flutings.
