Haugham

The spire of this church (All Saints) is a 'little brother' of nearby Louth's St James', and was built in the 1840s at the expense of the then vicar - a member of the Chaplin family.

It is often incorrectly attributed to by W A Nicholson of Lincoln; it was in fact designed by G R Willoughby of Louth, an associate of Nicholson.

Haugham, All Saints

Built to a design of G R Willoughby* in 1840, mainly in brick with lime cement rendering, All Saints' is a miniature replica of Louth St James'.

It was declared redundant in 1981 but remains consecrated and is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. The church is included in the Faber Guide to Victorian Churches.

A silhouette of the church against the west sky in deep midwinter.

It is clear to see in a view like this how closely the church was modelled on St James' church in Louth.

Faithful to the medieval style of the church, the early-Victorian bench ends are decorated with cast iron "poppy-heads".

Haugham, All Saints, Corbel

The roof appears to be supported on carved corbels, but they are made of cast plaster. The theft of the lead caused all of them to be damaged by water ingress and this is the most complete of those remaining.

This is the octagonal Perpendicular font that must have been saved from the earlier church on the site.

Each face of the bowl carries a design of a shield on a cusped field.

In the churchyard west of the tower is the font probably commissioned for the 1840s church. It has quatrefoils around the bowl and a panelled stem.

Both the second edition of Pevsner (1989) and the Historic England listing describe it inside the building but the year of its removal is not now remembered.

The furniture and fittings inside the church date from the building of the church in 1840.

There are two box pews, with traceried decoration in the side panels, in north-east end of the nave. By oral tradition they are understood to have been for the Eve family (nearest the chancel) and the Cartwright family who were the chief tenants of the Chaplin landlords.

The boards either side of the chancel arch quote the Ten Commandments.

This view, looking west, shows the entrance into the tower and the ornate trusses of the tie-beam roof.

In the foreground are box pews, a somewhat unusual provision for the nineteenth century.

Wall-mounted plaque commemorating Henry Anton, a relative of a local tenant farmer. The inscription reads:

In affectionate remembrance of Lieut Colonel Henry Anton, 1st West Indies Regiment, late Governor of the Gambia, eldest and dearly loved son of Capt. Alexander and Jessy Rachel Anton, who died of dysentery on board the Royal Mail Steam Ship "Lagos", on his passage home, 1st August 1871, aged 17 years. Most deeply regretted.

It was the appointment of Revd G A Chaplin to the living that prompted the 1840 rebuilding of the church which had previously been described as a "mean barn-like structure", clearly unsuitable for an incumbent who was part of the land-owning family.

Haugham, All Saints, Memorial (Pearson)

William Hyde Pearson (1783-1849) was born at xxx. He qualified as a doctor and ran a successful London practice.

He acquired influential friends and patrons and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1826.

In 1838, in the Queen Victoria's Coronation honours, Pearson was knighted for his services in the collection of medical and statistical information in Europe and the East.

He died in Welton, Northamptonshire, and was buried at St Martin's Church in that village.

The pinnacles and parapet above the porch entrance carry through the elaborate Gothic theme.

The three lights in the upper part of the east window depict St Peter (left, damaged) and St Paul (right), flanking the figure of Christ carrying his cross.

The ribbon below Christ's figure carries the text Isaiah C.53 V.1

The crocketed spire, turret pinnacles and flying buttresses above the tower are identical in style to those at St James' Church in nearby Louth.

The pierced and stepped crenelations are an additional element in this design.

On the north side of the nave and above the box pew used by the Eve family is this stained glass by Heaton, Butler & Bayne.

The left-hand light is clearly based on the painting "The Light of the World" by William Holman Hunt

This small building stands alongside the green lane to the church and was the village blacksmith's premises for many years.

It is hoped to renovate the building and convert it into a dwelling.

To the north are the remains of an eighteenth-century walled garden, the subject of historical research deposited with the Historic Environment Record.
