Lissington, Free Methodist Chapel

Lissington boasted both Free and Wesleyan Methodist Chapels.

In "A List And Brief Details Of Chapels In The Market Rasen & Caistor Circuit Past And Present" prepared by Colin Shepherdson & Eileen H Mumby September 1997 (Revised August 1998) it is reported that

LISSINGTON WESLEYAN METHODIST

A house was registered for worship in 1797 and a chapel built on the corner of the main road with Wickenby Road in 1819. It closed in October 1933 and subsequently, partly demolished, with the remainder in use as a store shed.

LISSINGTON FREE METHODIST / UNITED METHODIST

A chapel, in Wickenby Road, was built in 1863 and is still in use with a membership of 7.

Unfortunately both chapels are now closed.

Lissington, Saint John the Baptist

The church of St John the Baptist is a long low Georgian building of 1796, comprising nave with bell-cote and chancel.

The simple interior has white walls, brick arches, an open chancel screen and 19th century fittings.

Kelly's Directory of Lincolnshire 1919 states :-

"The church of St. John the Baptist is a small building of stone, consisting of chancel and nave, and a turret containing one bell:

considerable improvements were made in 1895 by the removal of a west gallery and high pews, and the substitution of open seats:

a new door to the south-west entrance has also been provided and a new organ was obtained in 1897:

the church was restored in 1911 at a cost of £500:

there are 100 sittings.

The register dates from the year 1562.

The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £228, including 56 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of York and held since 1913 by the Rev. Charles Powell Mellor.

White's Directory of Lincolnshire 1856 states :-

"The Church (St. John) is a small fabric, with a bell hung in an arch ; and the living is a vicarage, valued in K.B. at £12. 16s. 6d., and now at £365, having 60 acres of glebe, and being endowed with the rectorial tithes, on the payment of a small rent charge to the Dean and Chapter of York, the patrons and appropriators.

The Rev. Henry B. Boothby, B.A., is the incumbent, and has a good Vicarage House, built in 1839, at the cost of about £800"
