Kelly's Directory 1930 reports:-

"The church of St. Giles is an ancient edifice of stone, partly of Saxon date, the nave being Early Decorated, and consists of chancel, nave and an embattled western tower, with four pinnacles, containing 3 bells, one dated 1634, and a clock, presented in 1921 by Joseph Grantham esq. :

the belfry stage has a double window in each face, the arches resting in the middle on a single stone extending through the thick-ness of the wall, supported by a shaft with a curiously ornamented impost, which seems to be wholly confined to Saxon work ; the basement courses show signs of fire, indicating that a still older tower once standing on these foundations has been burnt, and at the west end of the north wall there appears to be a fragment of the earlier church once forming an exterior angle, and consisting of huge blocks of brownish sandstone:

the east window is a memorial to the Rev. C. F. Thomas M.A. a former rector:

a tablet on the north wall was erected in 1920 in memory of the 8 men of this parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18:

the interior was repaired in 1859, at a cost of £400, and was also reseated:

there are 103 sittings"

Noted in Kelly's Directory 1930 :-

"On the night of Sept. 23rd, 1916, an air raid by Zeppelins did much damage in the village to the church and houses, 17 bombs actually being dropped in the vicinity ; all the windows in the church were smashed and half the roof was destroyed, but no lives were lost ; a red and grey granite column erected in the church-yard marks the actual spot at which one of the bombs fell ; this memorial was given and unveiled by Joseph Grantham esq. and dedicated by the rector Sept. 23rd, 1920"

"South side has an inserted pointed C13 doorway of 2 orders beneath a hoodmould with weathered headstops, the outer order with nook-shafts and filleted arch, the inner order chamfered. Above this, a blocked pointed C13 arch, apparently C13 but incorporating chamfered ironstone imposts and voussoirs from an C11-style round arch"

White's Directory 1872 has :-

"The Church (St. Giles), which is a small structure consisting of nave, chancel, and square tower with two bells, was rebuilt in 1810, except the tower, which belonged to the original church.

It was repewed, restored, and newly roofed, in 1859, at a cost of about £400, raised chiefly by subscription, when a stained glass window, given by the Rector, was inserted in the east end.

The benefice is a rectory, valued in K.B. at £8. 10s. 10d., and now at £260, in the patronage of Jesus College, Oxford, and incumbency of the Rev. Robt. P. Williams, M.A., who has 38 acres of glebe and a good residence"
