On the main road, the A16, and in a part of the parish still known as White Pit, is the rump of the Wesleyan Chapel, later used as the village hall.

The original building projected towards the camera.

This small church was built in 1828.  The gabled porch has a pointed arch surmounted by a sandstone cross.

Above a roundel, is the bellcote, with louvred sides and a flat top, which until recently was battlemented. (Pevsner said the bellcote had teeth rather than battlements)

The bellcote at St Nicholas' church has been recently rebuilt - hence the loss of the 'teeth'.

St Nicholas is built of red brick - laid in Flemish bond - with painted ashlar dressings.

The windows are in Gothic style throughout, and there is a tiny facetted chancel at the east end.

One wonders whether the pair of scrapers was supplied for symmetry or a hoped-for influx of booted farmers for Harvest Festival.

Two recessed quatrefoils are a small decorative detail at the west end of the nave above the entrance.

The bell-rope is causing wear to the arch.

The gravestone of Woodthorpe Marshall has been placed on the brick plinth of the church and fastened to the wall with two iron clasps.

He died 4 May 1819. Perhaps reaching 94 years of age should be rewarded with an elevated position!

This glazed and framed painting is displayed in the vestry. A label at the top corner reads:

"Mr William Clark was one of three shoemakers in Swaby, and Parish Clerk".

The artist was Miss Cholmeley, daughter of the Rector.

The white Carrara marble plaque displayed at the main crossroads below the notice board is an unexpected design. It was originally mounted inside the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel until that closed.

It was re-sited initially on the Sunday Schoolroom but when doubts were raised about the future of that building, the plaque was moved here.

Since it was not designed to be exposed to the weather the text has washed off. However, it is a replica of the memorial in St Nicholas church.
